These machines target the ABS and cores

Glutes

Quads

Hamstrings

Calves and Hip Flexor

Well rounded exercise program.

These machines are made up of very good quality material and of course, there are much cheaper than a full size one. That’s because you are just getting only the pedal mechanism and not the full-size frame. They are strong and durable.

Work And Exercise At The Same Time

The great thing about these under desk exercise machine is you can be at work and are able to get in your exercise at the same time. The motion of your leg is very light and will not affect your ability to use your hands for other things like working at your desk to use your computer or other tasks at the same time.

Suitable For The Home Or The Office

These machines are very convenient and can be used either at your office under your desk or at home while you are watching your favorite program, these machines are usually very quiet

There Pros and cons for these two machines I will look at the CUBII First

Pros

It is a super quiet machine

It is very comfortable to use

It is very sturdy

This machine has a  star ratings

Cons

There is no built-in console on the elliptical itself, you can only monitor your progress by connecting to the app vis iPhone.

The Sunny Health SF-E2636

Pros

Motorised

Comes fully assembled

Very quiet

Cons the right foot pedal breaks off after a couple of use and while the motor has a warranty for a year the attachments are only for 90 days so my suggestion is if you decide to buy this one buy extra insurance or warranty

Conclusion

The Sunny health is way cheaper than the Cubii but I am of the opinion that you will get a better service from the Cubii

What are the Symptoms of Parkinson Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disease that affects the nervous system it is a disorder that affects movement.

The Symptoms start gradually, and sometimes usually starting on one side of the body with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand

Tremors are the most common sign and usually begins in a limb, usually, the hand and your hand may tremor when it is at rest.

The tremor may cause you to rub your thumb and forefinger back-and-forth, known as a pill-rolling tremor.

Slowed movement (bradykinesia)

Another symptom of Parkinson’s disease is slowing of your movement, making the simplest of tasks difficult and time-consuming.

Your steps may become shorter when you walk causing it taking longer to go from place to place.

It may also be difficult to get out of a chair because your muscles become weak and you may drag your feet as you try to walk as it becomes difficult to lift your feet.

Rigid muscles

Muscle stiffness can occur in any part of your body. And the muscles becomes not only stiff but can be painful and this limits your range of motion.

Impaired posture and balance.

As a result of Parkinson disease, your posture usually become stooped, and there may be a balance problem

Loss of automatic movements.

The ability to perform unconscious movement like blinking smiling or swinging your arms when you walk will be drastically decreased.

Speech changes.

Your speech pattern may change you may speak more softly, quickly, slur or hesitate before talking. Your speech may lose tone or pitch and become be more of a monotone (expressionless)

Writing changes.

Your handwriting may change in appearance because of the stiffness of the muscle of the arm it may become hard to write, and your writing may appear different from your regular handwriting.

Causes

Parkinson’s disease is caused when certain nerve cells (neurons) in the brain gradually break down or die. Many of these symptoms are due to a loss of the neurons that produce a chemical in your brain called dopamine.

When dopamine levels decrease, it causes abnormal brain activity, leading to symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

The cause of Parkinson’s disease is as yet unknown, but there are several factors that indicate they could play a role, including:

Genes

There is a certain genetic mutation that has been identified that can cause Parkinson disease but this is very rare and is only common in a family that has many members affected with the disease.

However, there are certain gene variations which appear to increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease but the risk of Parkinson’s disease for each of these genetic markers are relatively small

Environmental triggers

There is a very small risk that exposure to certain toxins or environmental factors may increase the risk of later Parkinson’s disease.

Researchers have also found that many changes occur in the brains of people with Parkinson’s disease, it is still not clear why these changes occur. These changes include:

The presence of Lewy bodies

Lewy bodies are clumps of specific substances within brain cells are microscopic markers of Parkinson’s disease. And researchers believe these Lewy bodies hold an important clue to the cause of Parkinson’s disease.

Alpha-synuclein is found within Lewy bodies

Alpha-synuclein is one of the important natural and widespread protein in substance found within Lewy bodies,

It’s found in all Lewy bodies in a clumped form that cells can’t break down. This is currently an important focus among Parkinson’s disease researchers.

Risk factors

AGE

Parkinson’s disease ordinarily begins in middle or late life, and the risk increases with age. People usually develop the disease around age 60 or older men more than women. Young adults rarely experience Parkinson disease.

.

Heredity.

There is a small risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, however, the risk increases if there many relatives in your family with Parkinson’s.

Sex. Men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than are women

.

Exposure to toxins.

There are indications that ongoing exposure to herbicides and pesticides may slightly increase your risk of Parkinson’s disease.

Complications

There are certain complications that often accompany Parkinson’s disease these problems, maybe treatable:

Thinking difficulties.

There may be cognitive problems (dementia) and thinking difficulties, which usually occur in the later stages of Parkinson’s disease. unfortunately, these cognitive problems aren’t very responsive to medications

Depression and emotional changes.

There may be some experience of depression, in the very early stages. Receiving treatment for depression can make it easier to handle the other challenges of Parkinson’s disease.

Other emotional changes may occur such as fear, anxiety or loss of motivation. Doctors may give you medications to treat these symptoms.

Swallowing problems.

Saliva accumulation in your mouth may develop due to slowed swallowing and this will lead to drooling

Chewing and eating problems

In the late-stage of Parkinson’s disease, the muscles in your mouth are affected, making chewing difficult. This can lead to choking and poor nutrition.

Sleep problems and sleep disorders

People with Parkinson’s disease often develop insomnia which includes waking up frequently throughout the night, and falling asleep during the day Medications may help your sleep problems.

Bladder problems

Parkinson’s disease may develop an incontinence problem, including being unable to control urine or having difficulty urinating. many people also have a constipation problem this is due to a slower digestive tract.

You may also experience blood pressure changes like a sudden drop in blood pressure when you stand causing you to feel dizzy or lightheaded.:

Smell dysfunction

You may lose the ability to differentiate between odors losing your sense of smell there may also be a loss of energy especially during the latter part of the day causing you to feel fatigue.

Pain.

People with Parkinson’s disease usually experience some pain, either in specific areas of their bodies or throughout their bodies.

Sexual dysfunction

Some people with Parkinson’s disease notice a decrease in sexual desire or performance.

The cause of Parkinson’s is unknown, and because of this there are no proven ways to prevent the disease and at this time there is no cure. But medication exists that can make the symptoms more manageable.

Research is still going on and some research has shown that regular aerobic exercise might reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease.

And other research has shown that people who drink caffeine — which is found in coffee, tea and cola are less likely to get Parkinson’s disease than those who don’t drink it. At this time there is still no definitive proof that caffeine actually protects against getting Parkinson’s, or is related in some other way.

The Effects of Diabetes on Your Body—Maintaining Good health

Diagnosed diabetes left unchecked and allowed getting out of control can result in a wide range of health issues that can affect the body in very negative ways. These health issues involved, the organs of the body and how the organs are affected

As stated in a previous post (https://healthandwellnessforboomers.com/causes-and-effect-of-diabetes-maintaining-good-health)Sugar comes from the food we eat and is the main fuel source of power for the human body. The hormone insulin helps the cells of the body convert glucose into fuel.

Effect on systems and organs

The systems and organs of the body that can be affected by diabetes are many and This includes the circulatory system, urinary, cardiovascular, nervous system and much more

Circulatory System

Circulatory system moves blood throughout the body, and it comprises the heart, arteries, capillaries, and veins.

This system circulates oxygenated blood from the lungs and heart throughout the entire body by way of the arteries, supplying nutrients and oxygen to the cells and remove waste products.

. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause damage to the large and small blood vessel which can lead to macrovascular disease.

Macrovascular disease

Macrovascular disease of the larger blood vessels this includes the coronary arteries, the aorta, and the artery in the brain and limbs. This disease sometimes occurs when a person has had uncontrolled diabetes for a long period and can cause the increase possibilities of heart attack and stroke.

The Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular system is made up of the circulatory system. Diabetes affects the cardiovascular system by causing the decrease in elasticity of the blood vessels and this causes them to become narrow which then impedes the flow of blood to the organs.

The Nervous System

The nervous system consists of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system:

  • The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system
  • The nerve fibers that branch from the spinal cord to all parts of the including the neck, upper and lower limbs, skeletal muscles and the internal organs.

Diabetic nephropathy affects all nerve endings (peripheral) including sensory and motor cells. Therefore, diabetic nephropathy can affect all organs and systems.

Signs and symptoms of nephropathy

Usually, symptoms develop gradually and you may not realize anything is wrong until significant damage is done to the nerve.

There are four types of diabetic nephropathy and you can be affected by more than one type. The four main types of Nephropathy are

  • Peripheral nephropathy
  • Autonomic nephropathy
  • Radiculoplexus nephropathy
  • Mononeuropathy,

Peripheral nephropathy

The most common of these diabetic nephropathies is peripheral nephropathy, The symptoms start in the feet first followed by the hands and arms.

Some of those symptoms include numbness, tingling sharp pains, Increased sensitivity to touch for some people the lightest touch can be painful, muscle weakness, sores infections and bone and joint pain.

These nerve damage usually happens about 25 years after the diabetes is diagnosed. The National Institute of Diabetes says diabetic nerve damage affects about 60-70 percent of diabetics are affected with nerve damage.

Diabetic patients should take care of their feet by checking the feet daily for blisters, cuts, corns, and any changes if these symptoms are caught early further damage can be prevented.

Use moisturizer on areas of dry rough or cracked skin on your feet and heels protect feet by wearing comfortable and supportive shoes taking these measures will help to keep your feet healthy.

Autonomic Nephropathy

Autonomic Nephropathy happens when diabetes effect and damage the nervous system that controls the organs of the body, that is the heart stomach, bladder, sex organs, eyes, and intestines.

According to the Mayo Clinic damage to any of these organs can cause

  • A lack of awareness that blood sugar levels are low (hypoglycemia unawareness)
  • Bladder problems, including urinary tract infections or urinary retention or incontinence
  • Constipation, uncontrolled diarrhea or both
  • Slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis), causing nausea, vomiting, bloating and loss of appetite
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Increased or decreased sweating
  • Problems controlling body temperature
  • Changes in the way your eyes adjust from light to dark
  • Increased heart rate at rest
  • Sharp drops in blood pressure after sitting or standing that may cause you to faint or feel lightheaded
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Decreased sexual response

Radiculoplexus nephropathy (diabetic amyotrophy)

Radiculoplexus nephropathy is more common in people with type 2 diabetes and the symptoms usually affect the nerves in the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs. Causing severe pain in the affected parts. There may be also weak and shrinking thigh muscles causing difficulty in rising from a sitting position if the abdomen is affected swelling may occur and weight loss.

Mononeuropathy

Mononeuropathy, or focal nephropathy, is caused by damage to a specific nerve in the face, middle of the body (torso) or leg. This condition is most common in older adults. The symptoms of mononeuropathy often strike suddenly and can cause severe pain. However, the effect is usually not long-term and doesn’t cause any lasting effect.

Symptoms usually cause pain in the Shin or foot, lower back, or pelvis front of thigh, chest or abdomen

Mononeuropathy can also cause nerve problems in the eyes and face, leading to Bells Palsy (paralysis on one side of the face0 also there could be a difficulty focusing, double vision, Aching behind one eye. Carpal tunnel syndrome can also be associated with mononeuropathy this occurs when something presses against a nerve

Summary

Diabetes is a disease that can cause a lot of damage to the whole body in most cases this disease can be prevented by avoiding foods with refined carbs and sugar, performing physical exercise keep active if overweight tries to lose the excess weight if you are a smoker quit smoking.

And if you are diagnosed with diabetes there are precautions that can be taken to limit the damage the disease can cause to the body

  • Good control of blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Getting regular laboratory tests, eye and foot exams
  • Making healthy food choices and staying physically active Taking medication as prescribed by your doctor Testing your blood sugar regularly

Causes and Effect of Diabetes—-Maintaining Good Health

Glucose (blood sugar) is vital to our health as it is an important source of energy for the cells that make up our body muscles, tissues and it is also our brain main source of fuel.

In order for the body to make sugar the food we eat is broken down in a form called glucose. This glucose is what provides the energy the body needs.

The blood and blood vessels are the means by which the sugar is transported from the stomach or to the liver where sugar is “manufactured” then to the cells where it is used or where it is stored as fat.

Sugar cannot go into the cells by itself, it needs insulin that is produced by the pancreas and then released into the blood, which serves as the helper, that lets sugar into the cells for use as energy.

Without insulin sugar cannot get into the cells to be used as energy and this causes the sugar level in the blood to rise and too much sugar in the blood is what causes diabetes, high blood sugar)

What are the types of Diabetes

There are 2 types of diabetes Type 1 and type 2, type 1 usually affect persons under 30 years old and is caused by a complete lack of insulin in their bodies. Although the exact cause has not been identified, it is clear that the cells which make insulin are destroyed by the body’s own immune system.

People with type 2 diabetes can still make insulin, but their cells have some degree of insulin resistance

Each part of the body has its own job and it is the constant production of hormones that leads to changes both bodily and mentally. The task of generating enzymes and hormones which are required for breaking food down lies with Pancreas.

This important part of the body is responsible for producing enough insulin in the body so that the sugar level remains intact. The imbalance in the production of insulin can lead to diabetes. Once the problem starts developing, it can be only controlled by taking a suitable diet and by avoiding eating sweets.

Pancreas and Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes usually develops as an autoimmune disorder, the presence of Type 1 diabetes signals the body’s inappropriate reaction to its own tissue and starts considering it as a foreign object

Basically, it is the Islet cells in the pancreas whose main aim is to produce insulin are seen as an enemy to the body. This then causes the body, to develop antibodies that fight enemy cells and destroy their ability to create insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is best treated with a dosage of insulin, that is injected in the veins for it to get absorbed into the capillaries where it can then start doing its function of breaking down food glucose.

Insulin should not be consumed in the form of a pill because the available juices in the stomach have the tendency to extinguish the insulin before it can properly function.

Pancreas and Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes, is when the transformation process of the carbohydrates into sugar (energy) gets slowed down. This slowing down of the transformation process raises the risk of getting heart disease, damage of organ, and various other serious complications. It is all about building up of resistance to insulin, which is a necessary part of controlling blood sugar level.

The symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes tends to appear after a long time you might be in a pre-diabetic state for a long time. With Type 2 Diabetes there is the tendency for the production of insulin to be reduced from the beta cells in the pancreas, which would lead to taking medication to enhance the production or in severe cases injecting insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes is usually hereditary. Some symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes are, dryness in the mouth, large appetite, frequent urination, sudden weight loss or gain, headaches and even blurred vision Type 2 Diabetes can become troublesome and even life-threatening. So, although Type 2 Diabetes is incurable with care medication.exercise and diet this disease can be managed. The patient should, therefore, consult the doctor on time and get treatment to keep it under control at all times.

The underlying cause of diabetes varies by type. But, no matter what type of diabetes you have, it can lead to excess sugar in your blood. Too much sugar in your blood can lead to serious health problems.

Long-term complications of Diabetes Mellitus:

Some many complications of diabetes, includes coronary artery disease, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease are caused by damage to large vessels in the body.

High glucose levels can lead to chronic inflammation in the body, including the walls of the arteries in the blood. This chronic inflammation leads to atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of a plaque with a fibrous cap on the walls of the arteries.

This buildup of plaque narrows the arteries which cause a decrease in blood flow in the arteries. In addition, these plaques can cause further damage by rupture and lead to the formation of a blood clot which blocks off blood flow. If this happens in the brain or the heart, it causes a stroke or a heart attack.

Being a diabetic may also cause damage to the smallest vessels in the body, leading to multiple long-term microvascular complications. This damage and destroys the cells in the blood vessels and this leads to decreased blood flow and tissue death.

Diabetes not managed or controlled can cause retinopathy (damage to the retina in the eyes, leading to blindness), nephropathy (damage to the kidneys resulting in kidney failure), neuropathy (damage to your nerves, which can cause numbness or tingling), and gastroparesis (dysfunction of your digestive system causing chronic vomiting and abdominal pain). All of these symptoms are caused by glucose-induced damage to blood vessels.

Diabetes has a negative effect on the body’s immune system. High glucose levels increase the activity of immune cells. These cells eventually become exhausted and desensitized, thus decreasing their effectiveness against invading pathogens. People with poorly controlled diabetics are more prone to severe skin infections and other infections like pneumonia or urinary tract infections.

Chronic diabetes conditions include type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes can be reversed sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes 100-125 gestational diabetes, also can be reversed pregnancy but may resolve after the baby is delivered.

Managing and controlling your diabetes:( copied from the Cleveland Clinic website)

While there is no cure for diabetes t can be treated and controlled. The goals of managing diabetes are to:

  • Keeping the blood glucose levels as near to normal as possible by balancing food intake with medication and activity.
  • Maintain your blood cholesterol and triglyceride (lipid) levels as near the normal ranges as possible by decreasing the total amount of fat to 30% or less of your total daily calories, and by reducing saturated fat and cholesterol.
  • Control your blood pressure. (Your blood pressure should not go over 130/80.)
  • Decrease or possibly prevent the development of diabetes-related health problems.https://www.facebook.com/silversneakers/videos/255169528458204/?t=5

You hold the keys to managing your diabetes by:

  • Planning what you eat and following a balanced meal plan.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Taking medication, if prescribed, and closely following the guidelines on how and when to take it.
  • Monitoring your blood glucose and blood pressure levels at home.
  • Keeping your appointments with your health care providers and having laboratory tests completed as ordered by your doctor.

What you do at home every day affects your blood glucose more than what your doctor can do every few months during your check-up.

I have posted a link for some easy exercises from silver sneakers try and do these at least 3 times per week.

Single-Leg Squat

This simple exercise boosts lower-body strength, balance, and overall stability.#SilverSneakersEOD

Review of the Vita-mix Professional Series 750 Blender,

I would like take a look at the vita mix Professional series 750 Blender. Vitamix Professional Series 750 Blender, Programmable, Self-Cleaning 64 oz. Container, BlackProgrammable self-cleaning 64 oz food processor/blender/seed grinder and so much more this higher end kitchen appliance is no ordinary tool but in my opinion a superhero of kitchen aids.

Made in the USA

The Vitamix is manufactured in the USA by the Bernard family which was founded by William Grover Barnard in 1921 this firm is still noted for its production of excellent kitchen appliances.

In 1937 a new appliance came on the scene (The Blender) Mr. Barnard saw the importance this new appliance could play in the quick preparation of healthy meals and started manufacturing the durable and reliable machines. This machine was called Vita-Mix ( Vita meaning life)

In 2012 there was a testing of blenders the machines were tested for a month making everything that could be tested in a blender and as expected the motor of most of the blenders burnt out and as Cooks illustrated which carried out the experiment explained that there are several factors that contribute to a blender’s effectiveness.

The Motor

One, unsurprisingly, is the motor’s strength; at 1,380 watts (about 2 horsepower), the Vitamix blenders had more than twice the strength of its main challenger in the testing roundup. The shape of the jar is also significant The Vitamix’s curved bottom helps create a vortex that pulls food more efficiently through the blades.

TheBlades

And the blades themselves, they come closer to the edge of the jar which is more effective at catching bits of food in their orbit. The blades can rotate at up to 240 mph.

It is no wonder the vita mix blender /food processor is one of the best kitchen appliances to have in your kitchen. With its powerful motor and aircraft grade stainless steel blades, a Vitamix blender can replace multiple appliances in your kitchen. You can use it for almost anything, you can use it to blend, you can also use it in place of your food processor, juicer, and, in some cases, stand mixer.

Hot soup without a stove

Make steaming-hot soup without a stove—in under 10 minutes. The friction from our blades lets you bring soup to serving temperature, right in the container.

Mix batters and dough

Quickly and easily mix batters for pancakes, waffles, cookies, muffins, crêpes, and cakes. Vitamix machines can also knead thick bread and pizza dough.

Frozen treats in seconds

Create chilled desserts—just add frozen ingredients to your machine and you’ll be enjoying ice cream, fruit sorbet and more in seconds.

Grind nuts, coffee and more

Homemade nut butter has never been easier or more delicious. Vitamix machines have the power to grind your favorite nuts into delicious nut butter, turn coffee beans into ground coffee, and more

Quality Material

The high-quality materials that are used in making the vita-mix (Tritan is a copolyester, which is as strong and durable as polycarbonate) which makes the machines extremely durability. Because the motor is so powerful, you don’t have to worry about it burning out as traditional blenders often do. Vitamix offers 7- to 10-year warranties on its blenders, too, so you can expect years of use.

A Vitamix blender grinds the toughest fruits and vegetables — skin and seeds included — into delicious smoothies or raw juices, which are chock-full of vitamins and minerals.

Below is a link to a video giving you an illustration of some things Vitamix can do.

There seems to be nothing this machine can’t handle, and while comes at a steep price its exceptional durability seven-year warranty makes it cheaper in the long run than a less expensive blender that needs continual replacing

Function and Diseases of the Nervous System——Maintaining good health

The nervous system is very important to the body it is divided in two parts the central nervous system which consist of the brain and the spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system which is made up of nerves fibers that branches off from the spinal cord and goes to all the other parts of the body, include all the internal organs muscles, legs, neck arms and torso.

The nervous system uses electrical and chemical means to help all parts of the body to communicate with each other. The nervous system receives messages or what is known as sensory impulses from the sensory organs ( which is the eyes, skin, ear, nose, and tongue) through sensory nerve fibers, this information is then analyzes and interprets the information is then carried to muscles and glands which act on these impulses and cause the body to react. We could not function without our central nervous system.

The nervous system includes the brain, the spinal cord, the nerves and all the sensory neurons in the body.

The Nervous system is what makes us human. It allows us to feel, think, act, live, love taste see and control our emotions

Sensing and acting

The sensory neurons gather input information such as temperature, body position, pain, light, hunger itch and anything that affect the five senses. This information is then transmitted through the nerves to the brain where the information is interpreted. This processing means interpreting what to do with the information. When the brain decide what action should be taken a signal is sent through the nerves to generate action such as contraction of a muscle when your hand touches a hot surface.

Control of all bodily processes

The nervous system not only control sensing and acting, but it also controls all processes in the body. It stimulates the involuntary movement of muscles such as the beating of the heart and controls the bowels. It can stimulate tissues to produce hormones and enzymes

Movement and emotion

The nervous system allows you to move your body by voluntary control of the muscles. The brain which is part of the nervous system, is of course extremely important in generating emotions, allowing you to enjoy, love, be angry and sad. The brain enables learning, memorizing, thinking, dreaming, control of behavior and many more.

Peripheral nervous system

The cranial nerves consist of 12 pairs of nerves that pass through small holes at the base of the skull. These nerves carry information and connecting the brain to different parts of the body.

Olfactory Nerve

The olfactory nerve is the shortest pair of cranial nerve and it is the sensory that transmits olfactory (smell) from the nose to the brain.

Optic Nerve

The optic pair of nerves is responsible for conducting visual stimuli from the eye to the brain. It takes the information of the photoreceptors( a receptor that is sensitive to light) to the brain, where later it will be integrated and interpreted. It emerges in the diencephalon.(function)

Oculomotor Nerve

This pair of nerves controls the movement of the eyes and is also responsible for the size of the pupil and it originates in the midbrain.

Trochlear Nerve

The Trochlear (The nerve that controls the superior oblique muscle of the eye, one of the muscles that move the eye (extraocular muscles). This nerve has a motor and somatic functions that are connected to the superior oblique muscle of the eye, being able to make the eyeballs move and rotate. Its nucleus also originates in the mesencephalon (midbrain) as well as the oculomotor nerve.

Trigeminal Nerve

This pair of nerves is the largest of the cranial nerves and its function is to carry sensitive information to the face, to convey information for the chewing process. The sensory fibers convey sensations of touch, it control (sensitive, sensory and motor), The sensory fibers convey sensations of touch, pain, and temperature from the front of the head including the mouth and also from the meninges.( The three membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord)

What is the nervous system?

Abducent

It is also known as the external ocular motor cranial nerves It is a cranial motor pair, responsible for transmitting the motor stimuli to the external rectus muscle of the eye and therefore allowing the eye to move to the opposite side from where we have the nose.

Facial or Intermediate

This pair of cranial nerves consists of several nerve fibers that perform different functions, it allows the facial muscles create facial expressions and also send signals to the salivary and lachrymal (tear) glands., it also collects taste information through the tongue.

vestibulocochlear Nerve

This sensory cranial nerve is known as the auditory and vestibular nerve, forming the vestibulocochlear. Which is responsible for balance and orientation in space and auditory function.

Glossopharyngeal Nerve

This nerve collects information from the taste buds (tongue) and sensory information from the pharynx. It gives orders to the salivary gland and various neck muscles that help with swallowing. This nerve also monitors blood pressure.

Vagus Nerve

This nerve is also known as pneumogastric. It comes from the medulla oblongata( the continuation of the spinal cord within the skull, forming the lowest part of the brain stem and containing control centers for the heart and lungs).and supplies nerves to the pharynx, esophagus, larynx, trachea, bronchi, heart, stomach and liver., it controls the action of swallowing and also in sending and transmitting signals to our autonomous system, to help and regulate activation and control stress levels.

Accessory Nerve

This nerve is called the spinal nerve. It is a motor nerve. It governs movements of the head and shoulders by supplying the sternocleidomastoid ( neck muscle) and trapezius muscles in the (anterior and posterior) regions of the neck(used to tilt and turn the head and neck, shrug, steady the shoulders, and twist the arms). The spinal nerve also allows us to throw our heads back.

Hypoglossal

This pair of nerves is a motor nerve and is involved in swallowing and speech.

The nervous system organizes, explains, and directs interactions between you and the world around you it is a complex, highly specialized network it affects every aspect of our bodily functions and as you can imagine there is also a great amount of disease that can affect this complex system I will list them and then we will look at the most common ones.

Parkinson disease

Parkinson disease is not curable but if caught early medication can be given that can slow down the damage of the cells. Parkinson disease is a progressive disease that affects movement, speech and also causes tremors, especially in the hands.

People may also have stiffness in their limbs and joints and because of this, they move slower than usual. The muscles of the affected person also become much weaker and this may cause their posture may assume a stooping position.

The symptoms of Parkinson disease can be managed by medications and therapy.

Multiple sclerosis

At the moment there is no cure for multiple sclerosis but research is ongoing and hopefully, there will be a cure found soon.  Multiple sclerosis is often a disabling disease of the central nervous system There are many symptoms associated with ms they range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis.

The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot as yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are continuing.

The typical symptoms of MS

The severity of the disease cannot be predicted and varies from person to person one person may have a vision problem and another may have attention and memory issues. At times some symptom could disappear completely and the person regains lost functions and in another case, the person could have partial or complete paralysis. MS usually affects persons between the ages of 20-50 and affects women more than men at a 2-1 average.

What causes these symptoms?

Ms occurs when the nerve fibers become damaged due to inflammation and break down of the protective insulation surrounding the nerve fibers of the CNS. The fibers are In a whitish insulating sheath which is made up of a mixture of proteins and phospholipids forming around many nerve fibers this sheath is called Myelin, The nerve fibers themselves are also damaged. and the Myelin is destroyed and replaced by scars of hardened patches of tissue. these harden lesions are called plaques and appear in many places within the central nervous system.

The average lifespan of an MS patient

A person with MS may live an average of about seven years less than the general population. however disease complications or other medical conditions like heart condition and stroke which can contribute to life expectancy being shortened. With care and attention to overall health and wellness the reduction of these risk will be lessened There are rare cases of MS that progress rapidly from disease onset and can be fatal

ALS amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord the word amyotrophic comes from the Greek word which means no muscle nourishment or wastes away. This lack of nourishment to the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles causes the area to degenerates and this leads to scarring or hardening (“sclerosis”) in the region

The eventual loss of the motor neurons due to a progressive degeneration in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the brain no longer has the ability to initiate and control muscle movement and any voluntary muscle action is progressively affected, people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe.

The motor nerves that are affected when you have ALS is the motor neurons that provide voluntary movements and muscle control.

There is no cure or treatments that stop or reverse the effects of ALS and persons usually die 3 ½ years after being diagnosed

Some Information for this post is from the ALS Association.

Welcome to the Gutenberg Editor

Of Mountains & Printing Presses

The goal of this new editor is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable. This whole post is composed of pieces of content—somewhat similar to LEGO bricks—that you can move around and interact with. Move your cursor around and you’ll notice the different blocks light up with outlines and arrows. Press the arrows to reposition blocks quickly, without fearing about losing things in the process of copying and pasting.

What you are reading now is a text block, the most basic block of all. The text block has its own controls to be moved freely around the post…

… like this one, which is right aligned.

Headings are separate blocks as well, which helps with the outline and organization of your content.

A Picture is worth a Thousand Words

Handling images and media with the utmost care is a primary focus of the new editor. Hopefully, you’ll find aspects of adding captions or going full-width with your pictures much easier and robust than before.

Beautiful landscape
If your theme supports it, you’ll see the “wide” button on the image toolbar. Give it a try.

Try selecting and removing or editing the caption, now you don’t have to be careful about selecting the image or other text by mistake and ruining the presentation.

The Inserter Tool

Imagine everything that WordPress can do is available to you quickly and in the same place on the interface. No need to figure out HTML tags, classes, or remember complicated shortcode syntax. That’s the spirit behind the inserter—the (+) button you’ll see around the editor—which allows you to browse all available content blocks and add them into your post. Plugins and themes are able to register their own, opening up all sort of possibilities for rich editing and publishing.

Go give it a try, you may discover things WordPress can already add into your posts that you didn’t know about. Here’s a short list of what you can currently find there:

  • Text & Headings
  • Images & Videos
  • Galleries
  • Embeds, like YouTube, Tweets, or other WordPress posts.
  • Layout blocks, like Buttons, Hero Images, Separators, etc.
  • And Lists like this one of course 🙂

Visual Editing

A huge benefit of blocks is that you can edit them in place and manipulate your content directly. Instead of having fields for editing things like the source of a quote, or the text of a button, you can directly change the content. Try editing the following quote:

The editor will endeavour to create a new page and post building experience that makes writing rich posts effortless, and has “blocks” to make it easy what today might take shortcodes, custom HTML, or “mystery meat” embed discovery.

Matt Mullenweg, 2017

The information corresponding to the source of the quote is a separate text field, similar to captions under images, so the structure of the quote is protected even if you select, modify, or remove the source. It’s always easy to add it back.

Blocks can be anything you need. For instance, you may want to add a subdued quote as part of the composition of your text, or you may prefer to display a giant stylized one. All of these options are available in the inserter.

You can change the amount of columns in your galleries by dragging a slider in the block inspector in the sidebar.

Media Rich

If you combine the new wide and full-wide alignments with galleries, you can create a very media rich layout, very quickly:

Accessibility is important don't forget image alt attribute

Sure, the full-wide image can be pretty big. But sometimes the image is worth it.

The above is a gallery with just two images. It’s an easier way to create visually appealing layouts, without having to deal with floats. You can also easily convert the gallery back to individual images again, by using the block switcher.

Any block can opt into these alignments. The embed block has them also, and is responsive out of the box:

https://vimeo.com/22439234

You can build any block you like, static or dynamic, decorative or plain. Here’s a pullquote block:

Code is Poetry

The WordPress community

If you want to learn more about how to build additional blocks, or if you are interested in helping with the project, head over to the GitHub repository.

Review of Bowflex bxe116 Elliptical Trainer

What is an elliptical?

Wikipedia definition states An elliptical trainer or cross-trainer (also called an X-trainer is a stationary exercise machine used to simulate stair climbing, walking or running without causing excessive pressure to the joints, hence decreasing the risk of impact injuries.

Based on the speed and the resistance set by the user the elliptical exercise machine offers a non-impact workout that is very good for cardiovascular workout

It is therefore very beneficial for people with certain kind of injuries and wants to stay fit to use an elliptical machine as the low impact will affect the very little if any at all.

Elliptical exercise machine usually have components that work the upper and lower body although some do not have this feature

Because the elliptical exercise machine is minimal-impact they are an excellent example of weight-bearing exercise(any activity you do that works your muscles and bones against gravity.)

They can be self-powered by user-generated motion or need to be plugged in for adjustment of motion and/or for supplying their electronic consoles and resistance systems.

The elliptical exercise machine gives a total body workout and targets more muscles than running, walking or any exercise that focuses on the legs.

The exercise for the upper body is done by use of the handle-levers this engages the muscles in the arms and shoulders, and the pedals require the legs muscles to work. If standing correctly, your core muscle will also be engaged.

Muscles Worked.

The main muscles worked on the elliptical are your quads, glutes, and hamstrings. Your calves also work but to a lesser degree. To work your calves muscles adjust the incline ramp (if your machine has one) to a steep angle.

Because the elliptical is very easy on the joints and provides total body workout along with great cardio it is one of the popular equipment in most gyms.

Exercising on the elliptical machine can be very boring and repetitive try high training intervals during your 15 -30min training and it is suggested to aim for at least training for 150 minutes per week.

Elliptical Benefits

The benefits of using the elliptical machine for your workouts are many, we will look at a few

It is non-impact you can emulate the motion of running without any strenuous on your joints that would occur otherwise.

The ability to exercise upper and lower body simultaneously as most elliptical trainers are now equipped with movable handles

When working out on the elliptical machine the same amount of calories are burned with less effort. Studies show that you are actually working harder than you think based on the heart rate.

You can also stride in reverse and this action activate different muscle group and put more emphasis on the quads and offer an adjustable variety mid-workout

There are a couple cons with the elliptical especially the weight bearing aspect because the pedals are suspended for less impact on the joints the weight bearing effect is not as good as the treadmill.

The elliptical can be used as an effective cardiovascular machine for those who want to help improve cardiovascular health with minimal impact.

For losing weight using the elliptical machine a should be implemented. Treadmills come with more stress on the joints so the elliptical is an adequate alternative. If you have an injury that is made worse by weight-bearing exercise like running then the elliptical may be the right option for you.
