What are The Health Needs Of The Elderly?
What is The Health Needs Of The Elderly?

The aging process changes both the body and the mind. Many senior changes are physiological, as the body degenerates and breaks down.

Along with these physical changes, emotional variations can also occur.

Declining health is a common issue with aging, with many illnesses and diseases plaguing the elderly.

Maintaining good health for as long as possible is possible by remaining active and paying attention to physical symptoms.

What Are The Health Issues Of The Aged, Common Elder Health

What are the health issues of the aged, everyday elder health?

Aging explained

At the biological level, aging results from the impact of the accumulation of a wide variety of cellular damage over time.

The damage leads to a gradual decrease in physical and mental capacity, a growing risk of disease, and death.

But these changes are not consistent and are only loosely associated with a person’s age in years.

While some 70-year-olds enjoy excellent health and functioning, other 70-year-olds are frail and require significant help from others.

Beyond biological changes, aging is also associated with other life transitions, such as retirement, relocation to more appropriate housing, and the death of friends and partners.

Common health conditions associated with aging

Common conditions in older age, including

  •  Breast cancer,

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, and it is the leading cause of death among cancers for women. It accounts for about 30 percent of cancer among all women.

There are various treatment options for breast cancer, depending on its invasiveness and stage.

Surgery is one of the most common options for breast cancer that is still localized in the breast.

There are two primary forms of breast cancer surgery: breast-conserving surgery, which aims to keep the part of the non-affected breast untouched, and a mastectomy, which is the complete removal of the breast. Which surgery you get depends on how much the cancer has spread.

Osteoporosis is a condition that can occur when the body doesn’t produce enough bone to replace the bone you lose, leading to weak, brittle bones that are prone to breaking easily.

You can make lifestyle choices—both physically and with your diet—that can help try and prevent osteoporosis.

Lift weights and lose weight

Various medications can combat the root cause of the disease, like a calcium deficiency or lack of hormones (from menopause)

Eat more foods rich in protein and calcium

Reduce your alcohol intake

  • Diabetes,

Diabetes is one of the biggest health concerns among seniors. About 30 million Americans have some form of diabetes, and another 80 million have prediabetes, recognizing you’re nearing developing full-on diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, as about 90 percent of people with diabetes have type 2.

It develops over time when your blood sugar levels rise too high.

If you have too much sugar in your blood, your body can’t produce the necessary insulin to bring to the cells and normalize blood sugar levels.

Warning signs for both forms of diabetes can be increased urination, extreme hunger, blurred vision, and fatigue.

Losing weight, eating healthy, and exercising help prevent diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes.

  • Arthritis,

Arthritis is a term used to describe a disease that inflames joints, primarily in your knees, elbows, fingers, and ankles.

More than 54 million Americans have arthritis and more women than men.

There are dozens of types of arthritis, but the most common among women include:

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It’s a form of degenerative arthritis, which means your joints degrade over time, causing bones to rub against each other.

About 60 percent of people with arthritis have this form.

Symptoms include pain and stiffness following inactivity, redness, swelling, and a decreased range of motion.

Treatment includes exercise, like jogging and lifting weights, which can help ease the pressure and build up the muscles surrounding your joints.

Pain management includes pills and creams. Over-the-counter medications like aspirin and ibuprofen work fine.

  • Heart disease,

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., and it’s also the leading cause of death for men.

The most common form of heart disease, CAD, occurs when plaque builds up on the inner walls of arteries and other blood vessels.

Heart disease and all the consequences that come with it can be prevented or treated.

Heart attack prevention is Healthy Blood pressure and cholesterol levels, a healthy diet, exercise, and reducing drinking alcohol and smoking.

  • Dementia, Depression,

Furthermore, as people age, they are more likely to experience several conditions simultaneously.

Dementia is a broad term that describes any form of memory loss from disease, trauma, or otherwise. Some forms of dementia include:

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. About three-quarters of all dementia cases among the elderly are Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive ailment that worsens over time.

The main symptoms of Alzheimer’s are short-term memory, difficulty retaining information, general confusion, and difficulty paying attention.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for dementia.

Older age is also characterized by the emergence of several complex health states that tend to occur only later in life and do not fall into distinct disease categories.

These are commonly called geriatric syndromes.

They are often the consequence of multiple underlying factors, including frailty, urinary incontinence, falls, delirium, and pressure ulcers.

Geriatric syndromes appear to be better predictors of death than the presence or number of specific diseases.

Yet, outside of countries with developed geriatric medicine as a specialty, they are often overlooked in traditionally structured health services and epidemiological research.

Factors influencing Healthy Ageing

Although some of the variations in older people’s health are genetic, much is due to people’s physical and social environments – including their homes, neighborhoods, communities, and personal characteristics – such as their sex, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

These factors start to influence the aging process at an early stage. The environments that people live in as children – or even as developing fetuses – combined with their characteristics have long-term effects on their age.

Environments also have an essential influence on the development and maintenance of healthy behaviors.

Maintaining healthy behaviors throughout life, mainly eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and refraining from tobacco use, contribute to reducing the risk of non-communicable diseases and improving physical and mental capacity.

Behaviors also remain important in older age. Strength training to maintain muscle mass and good nutrition can help preserve cognitive function, delay care dependency, and reverse frailty.

Supportive environments enable people to do what is important to them, despite losses in capacity. The availability of safe and accessible public buildings and transport and easy walk around are examples of supportive environments.

Challenges in responding to population aging

Diversity in older age

There is no ‘typical’ older person. Some 80-year-olds have physical and mental capacities similar to many 20-year-olds.

Other people experience significant declines in physical and mental abilities at much younger ages.

A comprehensive public health response must address this wide range of older people’s experiences and need.

Keeping up with family and friends can help maintain your mental and physical health.

Whether you see people in person or connect with them virtually through online video conferencing, a human-to-human connection is necessary. Don’t overlook it.

As you get older, take small steps to stay healthy and keep your eye on the bigger picture.

The choices you make today will affect you later. Do everything you can to set yourself up for success as you age.

You should consult your doctor or other professional healthcare providers if you have any specific questions about any medical matter.”

What is An Adult Walker

A walker or walking frame is a tool for disabled or frail people who need additional support to maintain balance or stability while walking, most commonly due to age-related physical restrictions. In the United Kingdom, a common equivalent term for a walker is Zimmer frame, a genericized trademark from Zimmer Biomet, a major manufacturer of such devices and joint replacement parts.

Recumbent Bike

What Is A  Recumbent Bike

Recumbent bicycle

A recumbent bicycle is a bicycle that places the rider in a laid-back reclining position. Most recumbent riders choose this type of design for ergonomic reasons: the rider’s weight is distributed comfortably over a larger area, supported by the back and buttocks. Wikipedia

Benefits of a Recumbent bicycle

Exercising on a bike is an excellent way to get a good workout for almost everybody.

It not only lets you do a heart-pumping cardio workout without demanding too much of your knees and joints, but it also targets most of your body’s major muscles.

Using a recumbent bike, you will get the same benefits that you would with an upright bike,

The significant difference is its seat arrangement; you will experience less back strain and be more comfortable during your workout.

Because of the seat difference, Recumbent bikes are ideal for individuals with mobility or balance problems, including older adults, because they are much easier to get on and off.

A recumbent bike allows your hands to be free, and you don’t need to grab onto the handles if you don’t want to.

Most recumbent bikes have handles on either side of the seat that you can grab onto if you’d like; you won’t lose your balance if you don’t.

Freeing your hands throughout your workout allows you to work, read a book, or text without worrying about losing your balance.

Another benefit of having your hands free is having a more complete workout by adding an upper body weight routine while you pedal.

In this post, I will be looking at the top 3 recumbent bikes (in my opinion)

  1. Schwinn Recunment Bike 230

The Schwinn 230 Bike offers lots of programming on a tight budget. Purchased for under $500 or less, it’s a solid deal considering. Those starting in more prime physical condition will likely be better served picking a bike with a heavier flywheel, but it’s pretty clear that this isn’t who Schwinn is targeting here.

The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike is a step up and doesn’t cost much more. We also recommend reading our honest reviews of recumbent bikes by Sole, Vision, and other reputable exercise bike brands.

Good bike for the price

Reviewed in Canada on April 4, 2019

Style Name: Schwinn 230Verified Purchase

I replaced my old Schwinn with this one as my old one gave up the ghost; I could not get it fixed as it was considered obsolete, and parts were no longer available.

I have been using my new one for the last three weeks and am happy with it except for a couple of things such as I find the seat & backrest uncomfortable (I don’t have much natural padding), the monitor is positioned too high affecting the view of my TV.

Most importantly, I’m having a problem with the heart rate sensors as I don’t get a reading on the display until I’m halfway through my 30-minute workout. I called Schwinn, and the problem was solved once I put some hand lotion on; I instantly got a reading. So unless you bony like me and have dry hands, you shouldn’t have any issues lol.

2.Nautilus Recumbent 618

The Nautilus 618 recumbent bike is a mid-range bike with impressive health-club-style features.

The seat adjustability (forward and back, back angle) and comfort (gel seat, extra padding) is a great plus, along with the step-thru design, you don’t have to lift a leg to get on and off – which is great if you’re dealing with an injury makes this an excellent investment.

The console is backlit and easy to read. Plus, you can connect with RideSocial and add virtual reality training if you need extra challenges.

The heavier unit weight and weighted pedals give it more of a health club feel to the bike. Overall a great recumbent bike and very reasonably priced.

I’m 77, disabled, recovering from hip replacement surgery, and must get a knee replacement next week.

My wife is 73, able, and intelligent (which helps a lot). UPS delivered the box with some exterior damage which we photographed. There was some interior breaking of Styrofoam, but all parts were well-protected and looked good.

With some rest breaks, we assembled this stationary bike according to precise instructions in 2 1/2 hours. Sturdy boxes to rest the machine on during assembly are helpful. The tools provided are enough, except the Philips-head screwdriver is useless, so I used one of our own, which also has Allen wrench heads. Using pro tools was a plus.

Anyone can if two old people can put this bike together without harsh words. I’ll add more comments as we use it for exercise and my joint recovery.

Exerpeutic Recumbent Bike

The  Exerpeutic 4000 recumbent bike is an excellent investment for many reasons. Besides the main functions of a typical recumbent bike, it is recognized by different components inside, which improve its workout efficiency.

Although it has left some minors in use, there are many reasons why this type has become one of the most popular items in the fitness market. This machine is your great companion if you want to contact your console with different smart devices.

It took 2 of us to assemble the bike. It took us 1.5 hours to complete. Instructions were relatively easy to follow.

I gave it a test ride; adjusting the seat forwards and backward was quite easy. Found the perfect placement, and off I went.

This bike is sturdy, feels solid, and is noise-free. Found the perfect spot in my home for me to ride every day.

Still working on learning the control panel for the many levels offered in this bike. After 2 hours of completing the bike, I rode for 35 minutes and did 4.5 miles. I’m so pleased I took the time to search for the right Recumbent Bike.

When I saw this one, it had everything I was looking for. I get to be 67 years old, and I have big goals to achieve, and I’ll do it on this bike!!!

The Best Cookware For Healthy Cooking

Best Cookware For Healthy Cooking When it comes to your health, you should be careful when choosing your cookware
Best Cookware For Healthy Cooking When it comes to your health, you should be careful when choosing your cookware

As we make an excellent decision to choose to eat more healthy it has now been brought to our attention that with all-our good intentions we could be doing ourselves more harm if we use the wrong cookware to prepare these meals.

It is very important when choosing cookware for your home to know the risks of each type of cookware and decide which is the best cookware for healthy cooking

There are so many options in cookware that we are confused by the look and what may seem to make it easier for us that we overlook the safety concerns.

There are cookware made of different materials:

 Ceramic Cookware

Despite their name, ceramic pans are made with a stainless steel or aluminum body and exterior, and the interior cooking surface is coated with a natural sand derivative that is formulated into a spray solution, says Jordan Nathan.

“This solution is then applied as layers onto the core body of the pans. Finally, each pan is then cured in an oven to create the nonstick outer surface,” he explains.

If used on a regular basis, ceramic cookware is not as durable as other cookware,

Ceramic cookware is still relatively new, there are not enough studies to prove many of the manufacturer’s claims.

But as sol-gel ceramic surfaces wear down, tiny particles can break off and release into the food. there are no scientific studies to prove that the chemicals in these particles are toxic.

GreenPan is a Belgian brand with an international reputation. It’s the brainchild of two school friends: Jan Helskens and Wim De Veirman. Upon discovering that traditional non-stick pans released toxins when overheated and used PFOA during the manufacture of the coating, they set out to create a new alternative.

After a long search, they found the perfect material for their range: a ceramic coating called Thermolon.

With the biggest challenge out of the way, the duo put an expert team together and had a lot of pleasure in designing cookware that looked beautiful, performed brilliantly and made cooking even more of a joy.

10 years later; their pans are loved around the world.

Aluminum Cookware

Aluminum is an abundant metallic chemical element that is widely used throughout the world for a wide range of products. Many consumers interact with some form of it on a daily basis, especially if they are active in the kitchen.

one of the more common applications of cast aluminum is in the creation of cookware.

Aluminum is used for skillets, baking pans, and other kitchen essentials. Usually created using the die-cast approach, the cookware can withstand the high temperatures required to cook food properly and will remain useful for a number of years with no more than minimal care.

Aluminum is a great heat conductor, which means that your pan will heat up quickly and cook food evenly.

Aluminum cookware is known for being highly reactive and leaching into food

Stainless Steel Cookware

Stainless steel is one of the materials that people often check when looking for non-toxic cookware. It is said to be inert and doesn’t leach harmful chemicals to the food.

Stainless steel pans are popular and have been in kitchens for decades. These are made from a metal alloy that also contains percentages of nickel and chromium or other metals

if stainless steel cookware is cleaned in a harsh manner with abrasive cleaning materials, then this can result in damage to the lining. Once damaged, it’s no longer as healthy of a cooking device because the leaching of metals then becomes possible

Nonstick Cookware

Nonstick cookware pretty much always contains a manmade chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid, also known as PFOA or C8. According to the American Cancer Society, “PFOA has the potential to be a health concern because it can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time.

The coating on some non-stick cookware can emit toxic fumes if heated past 450-500 degrees; it may be a surprise that a frying pan can easily reach or surpass that temperature on the stovetop.

There’s also some concern that PTFE coatings emit toxic fumes even at normal temperatures. If heated to the point of degradation, PTFE can cause flu-like symptoms.

Cast Iron

Cast iron cookware is a very old form of kitchen equipment, it is created by pouring molten iron into molds shaped like skillets, bread pans, and other bakeware.

Cast iron cookware is highly regarded for its even heating, versatility, and durability.

Many professional chefs will choose cast iron cookware over modern pans because of its natural nonstick qualities and ability to withstand high temperatures without warping.

Cast iron is unique in its heating abilities. It’s a solid, heavy piece that requires pre-heating to best conduct heat, especially to incredibly high temperatures.

Meat sears well and pan-fried food turns out crispy. If your cast iron is pre-heated properly, you can even take it off the stove and it will retain enough heat to cook or warm food.

Cast iron cookware free of PFOA and PTFE should not contain any other chemicals. But there is one substance that can end up in your food with this type of cookware: iron.

Cooking with cast iron is actually a natural way to increase iron levels.

Copper

While it can be safer than other options, the risk of using 100 percent copper cookware is that it could lead to an overconsumption of copper.

Copper cookware has been around as long as, or longer than, cast iron cookware. It conducts heat quickly and also loses heat quickly

You can find copper cookware that is actually copper on the outside (great for conducting heat) but has a non-reactive stainless steel lining on the inside, this type of cookware is the best type for healthy cooking

Glass Cookware

There are Some key advantages of glass cookware, they respond well to most oven based cooking, glass cookware does not react with acidic foods, safely stores all foods in it, and most importantly it is healthy as there are no adverse side effects from cooking in it.

Glass cookware is not just non-toxic and friendly to the environment, it’s also really durable. It’s another option to reduce the use of cookware containing poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) or highly fluorinated chemicals

Although glass is a good conductor of heat, it does not disburse it evenly, and therefore glass utensils are not at all efficient for stovetop cooking, as they easily form hot spots causing the glass to crack.

Additionally, glass vessels are totally incompetent when it comes to deep-frying, as the food necessitates constant stirring and longer cooking times.

Glass utensils should be cleaned with non-abrasive, self-polishing cleansers or with specially formulated mildly abrasive cleansers as suggested by the cookware manufacturer.

Glass-ceramic and glass utensils are dishwasher safe, and because they are non-porous, soaking very effective in unraveling burned-on foods or leftovers. With proper care, cookware made of glass can last at least seven to ten years.

When it comes to your health, you should be careful when choosing your cookware, there is a lot of cookware available today that is made with toxic chemicals, more and more brands offer non-toxic lines of cookware.

Have you had any experience with either of the cookware mentioned in this post, please let me hear of your experience,
