The lungs are an essential respiratory organ, located on either side of the heart. Their main function is to transport oxygen from the atmosphere into the bloodstream and to release carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere.
The body’s cells need the oxygen to work and grow. So it is important that we keep our lungs healthy.
The body has a natural defense system designed to protect the lungs. This works very well most of the time, keeping out dirt and fighting off germs.
However several harmful substances can damage the airways and threaten the lungs’ ability to work properly, which can lead to lung disease.
I worked as a CNA for a number of years, before retirement and during my time working in the field, I have come across a number of elderly people suffering from different types of chronic lung disease.
It was very painful for me to watch them laboring to breathe even with the aid of oxygen in some cases and it was still very difficult,
So I think we should look at some of these chronic lung diseases and their causes and what we could do to prevent them in our effort in maintaining good health.
